Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA : Dr. Avnish Jolly /ALPHA NEWS INDIA DESK : April 15th, ;——Law Day was celebrated across the country to celebrate the anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Right and Freedoms which came in to effect in 1982. The Court Office opened its doors to the public on Sunday, April 14, 2019 for Law Day Celebration. The day serves as an opportunity for curious guests to learn all about the Canadian Justice system.
It gave the public a friendly environment to learn about our Justice System and take a look at the courthouse. Students got a chance to converse with the members of the Bar. The courthouse and justice system can be “intimidating” for some people, and Law Day is the perfect occasion to learn about the law, legal profession and justice system. During Law Day, guests were able to have guided tours of the courthouse and visit legal information booths hosted by different organizations. The groups were able to see all aspects of the courthouse from the different courtrooms.
The day was designed to be a safe space that would hopefully encourage the community to take responsibility for their actions while learning about the rights and freedoms based on the Charter.
Awareness’ on Rights through information had been the modus of operandi of the Manitoba Bar Association in its awareness campaigns. To ensure that the message reaches masses, the campaigns had been designed to spread awareness at all levels of the Society, with special reference to Child rights. Various social events had been used to spread the word about Rights and Duties in the community.
As a part of Law Day Celebrations, Manitoba Bar Association organized the Mock Trial with the help of School Children and different volunteers. It was recognized that children needed “Necessaries” and keeping this in view that this Mock Trial will help the Children to understand Judicial System in the perimeter of “Necessaries”.
The project strived to highlight the problems of Necessaries and Negligence needed by Children while their upbringing. They depicted the duties of parents, police officer, and doctor. The methodology for this initiative was educational-entertainment. In this process, they researched and abled to understand the behavior of reasonable and responsible person under the preview of Law. To make these Mock Trials meaningful lawyers rendered their services to the schools voluntarily. Being a member of Manitoba Bar Association Kristen Fogg and I, Avnish Jolly rendered the services to the Maples MET School under Seven Oaks School Division, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Jason D Neufeld from Maples MET School voluntarily participated in this activity.
